A New History
While the nation states of Akoros,
The Dagger Isles, Iruvia, Severos, Skovlan and Tycheros were all largely
established prior to the Cataclysm, the character of these nation-states as we
know them today was formed in the immediate aftermath of the event. After the
separation of Kotar, each of the newly-immortal sorcerers commenced stewardship
over one of these nations. The differing personalities of each sorcerer is
reflected in the current state and power of these nations, and the radically
different political and social natures of each nation is better explained by my
theory than previous notions of history.
Take, for example, the state of
Akoros. With the ashes of the Cataclysm barely cooled, the Immortal Emperor
seized control of power and immediately instituted a rigid bureaucracy that
allowed them to wield power over the whole of the state, and eventually, the
world. This control is reflected in the person of Akor, The Immortal Emperor,
who by all accounts has always been a domineering and meticulous individual. Akor
has gone so far as to rewrite history to state that they had been alive since
the dawn of time, making their claim to the throne of Akor indefinite.
Additionally, while it’s always been assumed that Akoros was named after Akor, my
analysis indicates that the opposite situation actually occurred; Akor renamed
himself to fit the paradigm I suggest above.
Of particular interest in this link
between personality and nation is the Dagger Isles, once led by Lady Thorn. By both
conventional and my accounts, The Dagger Isles were hit extremely hard by the
events of the Cataclysm. What was once a thriving breadbasket in the foothills
of the Dagger Range was reduced to a handful of small islands; the extremely
high death tolls resulted in a corresponding high concentration of spirit
activity, one that the new Dagger Islanders were unequipped to handle. Lady
Thorn was able to train the islanders in survival and combat techniques, and
today they are renowned as ghost-fighters. Once her people were
self-sufficient, the individualistic Thorn had no desire to lead her people
permanently. All accounts state that she left the Dagger Isles centuries ago,
and sightings of her are numerous but highly inconclusive. The Dagger Isles,
though, provide the most convincing evidence that the sorcerers have had an indelible
effect on the nations they stewarded. The people of Dagger’s shadow, a pastoral
society built around agriculture and community, became the Dagger Islanders, a
proud and individualistic people known for their survival skills.
Not enough paper exists to fill this text with all of the instances in which modern history has literally been written by the victors, but I hope that these examples are elucidative. Next, I will discuss theories about what these immortal sorcerers are up to during the present day…
